I'm a Mormon.

Yesterday Preston didn't have to work (which is a special occasion) and I was excited to spend every moment of a full day with him, so I was shocked when he told me to leave the house so that he could work on my Christmas present. I objected at first but he offered to keep Ruby with him and told me to go out and do whatever I wanted! Wahoo! I went to the movie store and parked a little close to the car next to me. I was sitting there snacking on some haribo gummy bears (so chewy and delicious) and enjoying some me time when I noticed that the owner of the other car was waiting for me to get out so that he could get in. I opened my door and apologized. The following conversation ensued:

"I see you have this sticker on your car (pointing to the BYU window decal)."
"Yup."
"Does that mean your mormon?"
"yup."
"Really?" - spoken in a surprised tone.
"yup."
"Currently?" - again with the surprised tone.
"Yup."
"So how's that going for you?"
"Awesome. I really like it."
"huh. ok. Well good luck with that."

It was a very odd conversation and I turned around and walked into the video store with the following thoughts in my head...

1. Wow. That was odd.
2. Is it shocking that I'm Mormon. Do I not LOOK mormon? Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
3. Oh crud...was that the missionary opportunity that I've been praying for and I just blew it?
4. Who says "awesome I really like it" when asked about being Mormon. Probably could have/should have come up with something better than that.
5. Wow that was really odd.

After renting Super 8 (which was a fun movie) I got back in my car and couldn't help but continue ruminating over the conversation. I started to ask myself, "so how is it going for me? This whole being a mormon thing?" I'm not sure what intentions the gentleman had who started this conversation, but for me at least it was a very thought provoking experience as I've considered how I'm doing as a mormon and how I can improve.

Having a baby has taught me to CHERISH every moment of "free" time. I have less time to do what I want when I want. This has been a blessing and a challenge. It's helped me prioritize, but I'm not so sure I've been putting the MOST important things first. I'm thankful that I had this strange encounter which reminded me that I am a mormon and it is awesome, but it's also a lot of work and I need to turn it up a notch.

***Just because she's so darn cute and posts without pictures are boring***

Oh, I wish you'd asked him "why?" I'm so curious to know what he is thinking about Mormons! Maybe he assumed you were in a polygamous marriage. :)

And yes. You should always post a Ruby picture. Always.

For the record, I think "I like it, its awesome" is a great and genuine response. Simple and to the point.

yeah... I think your comment was appropriate and next time you will be ready to take it further because you will have thought of more things to say. I like Robin's response too. Next time you could say 'why do you ask?' or 'what do you know about the Mormons?'.. simple conversation starters. Tosh will love this post.

I agree with your mom. So, I'm going to move on to what your thought #6 should have been...

6. What am I doing here? Who still goes to video stores?
